The other night I was out with some friends, Maine's only Drinking Liberally chapter, if you must know. The guy next to me tried to get a Black and Blue, which is a crazy seasonal riff on the now-traditional Black and Tan. Ethan, our waiter of the day, said, "This close to Halloween, we don't have the blueberry ale, just Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale."
Well, that was an easy leap. "See if the bartender can make me a Black and Orange, then," says my friend. Ethan rolled his eyes, but complied, and the pretty and aromatic beverage arrived in minutes, smelling like a pumpkin pie, and tasting like pie spice and dark malt.
It was so good that I guzzled my Guinness in order to have one just like it, and can heartily recommend it to any stout fans out there. Two great beers from opposite sides of the Atlantic come together in a single splendid drink...I bet we're not the first to think of it, though!
