I was curious as to how an avowedly Christian organization could condone trespassing onto private property, trying to remove people from jobs based on their religion, criticizing people who wish to raise their own children according to their own religious beliefs, and so on. To shed light on this, I went to their website, and read through their extensive statements of belief and policy. Just for chuckles, and I'm sure this is a typographical error, but section 15C of this page states clearly that they support open public discussion of "pubic" issues. At least it says so as of this writing. I needed the laugh after reading the rest of the hypocritical statements.
Section 5A states that parents should have the ultimate responsibility and authority in the education of their children".
Section 10 is all about religious freedom.
Section 11, after supporting full religious freedom for all people, and sincere respect for the rights of others, goes on to oppose discrimination on the basis of creed or religion, among the usual other bases. Then they condemn bigotry or hatred against any person or group.
Section 15A and 15E in particular must be seen to be believed. Let's just say that "deep and abiding respect for others" figures prominently.
I encourage you to go read through that page, then this one...particularly the part about inviting all citizens into the political process with graciousness and respect. Once you have gotten the idea about how these people, with the financial support of a number of churches in the state, work hard to make things so wonderful, with respect, honor, openness, and tolerance, then see the treatment they have subjected a Pagan church to, and the attacks on individuals based on their faith. Read here, and here.
Note how when non-Christians wish to raise their children in their own beliefs, that is a big, big problem, despite their stated beliefs in section 5A mentioned above.
In a letter dated June 25, Mike Hein, using the return address of the Civic League, not his own, wrote to the Democratic Party Leadership:
"Because she worships Hecate, the Greek goddess of witchcraft and magic, and publicly promotes this evil paganism to children, she has disqualified herself from this leadership role in Maine's Democrat Party. As a Christian, I condemn paganism, witchraft, sorcery, and the like."
A person commenting on a conservative board as "Augustaneocon", whose profile gives the IM address "MikeHeinCCL", fervently agreed with someone who characterized the Democratic Partly Leadership as "irrational nuts". This was by way of discussing the whole point of Hein's articles on the CCL website. This is not out of context. He wrote, "Spot on, nailed it."
I wonder if the Churches that send money to the Christian Civic League actually support this brand of sincere respect, opposing religious discrimination, and welcoming all citizens into the political process with graciousness and respect. Or if they even know what their donations are really supporting.
