Harry Potter Finals

Along with everyone else whose reading diet includes the odd fantasy novel, I'm looking forward to the last Harry Potter book. From day one, I was impressed to see how many kids got excited about reading for the first time because of HP. My only worry there is that too few parents are cashing in on that interest by providing more and more similar books in the home. There are so many directions to go, and many families have that shelf of six books in the house, but nothing else to show for the last eight or ten years. Why don' they try out Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson stories, Terry Pratchett, Charles De Lint, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Ursula Le Guin, Anne McCaffrey, and on and on...?
Adults who only read one or two top popular authors often go the same route. "I love James Patterson, but he only writes four books a year. The rest of the time I have to rent movies." Oh, please! Why not try Lee Child, Harlan Coban, Nelson DeMille, J.A. Jance, Michael Connelly, and on and on...?
Try this: when you pick up your HP7 book this weekend, ask your friendly local bookseller for an additional recommendation, and bring a second book home. I won't say it will change your life, because only you can do that.
