I just saw a car sporting two bumper stickers. One read "Maine is #1...in taxes!"
The other was the classic jingoistic slogan, "America, love it or leave it!"
We all know what the second one means. It's like, "United we stand," telling us that dissent is bad, supports the terrorists, gives comfort to our enemies, like that. If you love your country, you shouldn't yell if it heads down a wrong path. Just follow. Protestors are evil. Like it or lump it. It's a bumper sticker that implies a whole Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, "I declare that I am right, so you must be an imbecile" attitude.
And that's one way to be patriotic. It seems to work for a lot of people, so who am I to judge. So then the owner of this car, who is promoting that attitude, parks his car in MY state, MY beloved Maine, and has the GALL to criticize the way it's being run! Why not leave it, if you don't love it? What's that? You DO love it, you just think it should be run better? Hmmm...
Here's a prediction. The same people who are annoyed at those of us who keep their Kerry stickers on their cars, countering with "You lost, get over it" stickers, will soon be trumpeting the Son of Tabor stickers, proud to continue to promote an idea that Mainers have shut down twice now. You lost, get over it.

Speaking of bumper stickers ... I saw one yesterday that you'd probably like. It had a picture of the American flag and the words "These colors don't run ... the world." Loved it! Next to that was one which said, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will know peace." All good words to live by. Shalom ...
